Postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d) in the the collaborative research project “Cities. Building. Culture - The Residential Heritage of the Soviet Union in Times of Multiple Crises”

The Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) conducts comparative research into historical and cultural developments and process-es in the region between the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic from late an-tiquity to the present day. The GWZO employs around 80 staff from Germany and abroad and has been based in Leipzig’s city centre since 2010. From 2025 onwards, it will also have a representative office in the city centre of Prague.
The subproject “Revalorisation and Reconstruction” will be conducted at GWZO from October 2024 as part of the collaborative research project “Cities. Building. Culture - The Residential Heritage of the Soviet Union in Times of Multiple Crises” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This international and interdisciplinary project seeks to develop new approaches to resilient and sustainable urban
development, in cooperation with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and RWTH Aachen.
For the subproject based at the GWZO in Leipzig we are looking for, subject to funding approval by the BMBF
at the earliest possible date
a postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d)
in salary group 13 TV-L, 75%. The position will last until September 30, 2027 (in ac-cordance with the provisions of the WissZeitVG).

Tasks

  • conduct research on the Soviet residential heritage in Ukraine and on recon-struction following wartime destruction from a comparative perspective
  • develop concepts for the safeguarding of historical building stock in the framework of resilient and sustainable urban development, in close coopera-tion with the partners of the collaborative research project „Cities. Building. Culture“
  • cooperation with international partners, in particular in Ukraine
  • contribute to the organisation of scientific events
  • interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers at the GWZO, especially in the junior research group “Contrasting East Central Europe” and the department 2 “Culture and Imagination”

Your profile

  • a doctorate or a dissertation close to submission in architecture (architectural history), art history, history, urban planning, and related subjects
  • excellent knowledge of English
  • other relevant language skills for researching the topic
  • preparedness to contribute to teaching in international cooperation
  • preparedness for interdisciplinary collaboration
