The laboratory (Head: Prof. Dr. med. Christian Reeps) is located on the campus of the University Hospital near the operating theaters and is embedded in the research laboratory of the Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. The primary focus of the basic research group (Head: Dr. rer. nat. Anja Hofmann) is the investigation of the role of reactive oxygen species in the development and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms and atherosclerosis as well as the development of novel stent technologies and coatings to prevent in-stent restenosis after endovascular stent implantation. Our research has a translational aspect and is geared on the medical needs of patients. In order to meet these requirements, there is intensive collaboration between materials science, bedside medicine and basic experimental research.
Starting at August 1st, 2024 we are looking for a

Predoctoral Fellow/PhD Student (f/m/x)

This part-time position (65 percent) is limited to 36 month. Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L).
The PhD project is part of an international project consortium (M-ERA.NET) with partners in Dresden, Gdansk and Bucharest and aims to develop a new type of stent coating on bare metal stents for the targeted treatment of in-stent restenosis (ISR). The project focuses on the basic science part by testing the cellular toxicity and hemocompatibility of the new stent coating. Our laboratory also analyzes molecular mechanisms of ISR in vascular smooth muscle cells after contact with the stent coating. We have established explantation techniques and long-term cultures of atherosclerotic plaques from patients with atherosclerotic disease to study their interaction with the novel stent coating. By using primary vascular smooth muscle cells and atherosclerotic lesions from patients, we are able to analyze the process of ISR against the background of pre-existing atherosclerotic changes in the vessel wall.
