Senior Engineering Manager (m/w/d) - E-Commerce

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager (m/f/d) to lead and manage engineering managers and their teams. This role drives engineering excellence, fosters innovation, and ensures the delivery of impactful projects. As the Senior Engineering Manager (m/f/d). You will oversee 3-4 managers with teams of 6-10 engineers, scaling processes and promoting cross-functional collaboration. You must thrive in ambiguity and work independently to deliver results. As a key leader, you will bridge business stakeholders and engineering teams, aligning business objectives with engineering capabilities for optimal outcomes.

Your tasks

  • Lead and Manage Managers: Oversee and mentor 3-4 Engineering Managers, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback to help them lead their respective teams effectively.
  • Strategic Leadership and Problem-Solving: Demonstrate a strong ability to self-unblock and problem-solve in ambiguous situations, leading teams with confidence when clear paths are not readily available. Empower managers and teams to solve challenges independently, fostering a proactive culture.
  • Continuous Improvement of Codebases and Engineering Practices: Drive improvements in software engineering practices, ensuring teams are regularly enhancing code quality, maintaining scalable codebases, and adopting best practices in software development and architecture.
  • Seek Feedback on Architectural Decisions: Engage with both peers and technical leaders to gather feedback on major architectural decisions, fostering a collaborative environment that values diverse perspectives and ensures the best possible solutions.
  • Drive Team Performance: Ensure teams consistently meet project goals, adhere to timelines, and deliver high-quality solutions while maintaining a high standard of engineering excellence.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with senior leadership to set engineering priorities, drive technical vision, and contribute to long-term business goals. Align engineering initiatives with industry trends and customer needs, ensuring teams stay competitive and relevant.
  • Resource Allocation and Scaling: Ensure optimal resource allocation across teams, assess and plan for team growth, and maintain a healthy work environment that fosters collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement best practices to improve engineering processes, enhance productivity, and ensure scalability across teams. Encourage managers and teams to continually seek opportunities for efficiency and innovation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and operations teams to align engineering efforts with overall business objectives, ensuring seamless project execution and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Mentorship & Personal Growth: Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and development. Actively mentor engineering managers and their teams, promoting growth both within the current role and in preparation for future opportunities.
  • Industry and Customer Knowledge: Stay informed of industry trends, market conditions, and customer feedback. Translate this knowledge into actionable plans for engineering teams to ensure product relevance and market success.
  • Performance & Risk Management: Monitor engineering performance metrics, identify and mitigate project risks, and resolve any roadblocks to ensure successful project delivery.

Your profile

  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in the IT/Engineering field, with a minimum of 5 years managing engineering managers and leading large teams.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of successfully managing managers and large engineering teams (30+ team members overall), with the ability to motivate, mentor, and lead by example in uncertain and evolving situations.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong technical background with the ability to engage with engineers on architectural and code-level discussions, and make informed decisions on complex technical challenges.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated experience in managing large-scale, high-impact engineering projects with a focus on timely delivery and quality assurance.
  • Strategic Mindset: Ability to translate business goals into actionable engineering plans and execute on them efficiently.
  • Collaboration Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working closely with cross-functional teams including product, design, and operations.
  • Problem-Solving & Independence: A hands-on approach to diagnosing and solving problems independently, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and make decisions that move projects forward.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with agile methodologies and continuous integration/delivery pipelines.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies, DevOps practices, and modern software development frameworks.
  • Previous experience in a fast-growing technology company or startup environment.
